Allergy Bedding Helps You Sleep Better

Posted on: January 19, 2011

Dust mites are a leading source of allergies. Microscopic in size and resembling ticks or fleas, they feed on human skin and blood cells and are present in mattresses and pillows. Allergies result from contact with proteins found in molted skin, dead bodies and the feces of dust mites. Killing these pests requires high temperatures, such as boiling. It is impractical for most people to boil an entire mattress, but allergy relief can be obtained by minimizing contact with dust mites through allergy bedding and allergy bedding covers.

An allergy bedding cover provides a physical barrier preventing dust mites from reaching you while you sleep. The special weave used in these products makes holes too small for the dust mite to penetrate but allows air to pass, similar to a chain link fence. Dust mites and their body parts are therefore confined to the fibers underneath the allergy bedding instead of being inhaled or coming into contact with the skin.

Covers are made in various sizes to fit any mattress from twin to king and corresponding pillows. To use, you simply insert the mattress into the cover and zip it up. These products are convenient and easy to clean because you simply unzip, remove and throw in the laundry. Covers are available for box springs, pillows and comforters also, making it possible to have your entire bed protected from dust mites.

Another class of allergy relief products includes pillows made with anti-dust mite fabric and filling, as well as allergy-proof mattress pads, quilts and feather beds. Wool is naturally resistant to dust mites, and many of these products use wool filling and soft wool fleece for areas that touch the skin. Another advantage to these products is that their manufacturers avoid treating them with harsh chemicals such as dyes or bleaches which can aggravate allergies.

Bedding is available from several sources, including specialty retailers online. Quality and prices vary, but the most durable and comfortable products tends to be made from 100 percent cotton as opposed to nylon or polyester. Although slightly more expensive, cotton tends to “breathe” better and provide a cooler surface to sleep on.

As we can spend up to one-third of our lives in bed, it makes sense to invest in a decent set of allergy bedding covers as part of a treatment regimen directed by a specialist.
